Technical Disclosure Form

In order to provide you with tailored advice and, if appropriate, an accurate cost estimate for preparing and filing a patent application, we require technical details relating to your idea or invention.

Please complete and submit the following short form.  It asks a series of targeted questions aimed at extracting the key information we need to advise you further and provide cost estimates.  If you prefer, an editable version of the form may be downloaded here for emailing to us.  Drawings or photographs can be very useful in terms of conveying the key concepts or technical features underpinning an invention and these can be uploaded below.

Important:  As a firm of Chartered Patent Attorneys, anything information you disclose to us is covered by “client-attorney legal privilege” as is confirmed by Section 280 of the UK Copyright, Design and Patents Act 1988 as detailed here:- http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/48/section/280.  We are also bound by strict confidentiality obligations under the Rules of Conduct set by the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA).   For example, Rule 8.5 states: “If information is obtained in relation to a prospective client, a regulated person may still be bound by a duty of confidentiality, even if that prospective client does not subsequently instruct that person or their firm”.

  • NB: if the innovative aspect underpinning the invention is “computer implemented” – e.g. a software app – please first read the information provided here.
  • For example, does your invention improve upon an existing product or service? Please provide a web link or other background information.
  • In other words, what is it about the difference(s) identified in box 3 that makes your invention better and/or more efficient and/or more environmentally friendly and/or cheaper to make etc. If your invention does not solve a problem as such but simply offers an alternative way of doing something then please do let us know since this may also be protectable.
  • i.e. without which the invention could not operate to provide the advantages identified in box 4.
  • We ask this to ensure, as best as possible, that a patent application is appropriate and aligned with your commercial goals.
